all-too fleeting moment in New York City history, when the city
bonded to memorialize and pay tribute.

When I stopped taking photos of store windows, at
the end of October, I found I couldn't stop looking at windows.
There were WTC tributes woven into Christmas displays. And some
of the most interesting windows appeared in early February. Valentine's
Day, with its built-in red and white, was a natural for red, white,
and blue. It was also an opportunity for some of the most creative
window-dressers to reiterate their gratitude and love. As an otherwise
uninteresting window in San Francisco's Mission District proclaimed:
"We Love New York." This sign, almost a window cliché four
months ago, seemed both out of place and appropriate. Then, in a
hardware store six blocks from my apartment, there was a two-window
display of gas masks and other protective devices. A few of the
