Canopy Height Modification

Before I sat in an RV for the first time I was a little concerned about how I would fit.  Being 6'3 I have sat in a lot of airplanes that I would not choose to spend any length of time in.  When I sat in the -6 for the first time I was relieved to see that I did indeed fit.  However the clearance between the top of my headset rack and the inside of the canopy was a little less than I wanted.  Consequently I decided to raise the canopy height slightly.

I accomplished this by raising the height of the tip-up roll bar about 3/4 inch.  The two little "feet" which attach the roll bar to the fuselage were made a bit longer and the roll bar simply raised up.  This did change the geometry of the canopy hinge somewhat, and I also had to make new, taller canopy side skirts.  The extra work was worth it.  As it is, I have just enough clearance (about 1 inch) for my headset to fit.

If you are tall, and especially if you plan to use a headset with a very thick headband (for example Lightspeeds) you should look at this area and see how you fit.

The pictures probably don't show you much, but if you compare the dimensions of the feet (I forget the part numbers, in the -6 we made 'em ourselves from a hunk of Al angle) and compare it to the plans, I think it'll make sense to you.
