28th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry
Dates of Service: 2 Sep 1862 - 6 Jul 1863
George Henry Russ was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, on August 19, 1847, the son of George Henry Russ and Sarah Martin
Crowell. His father died in March of 1851 from typhoid fever, when young George
was not yet four years old. George grew up in Perth Amboy, living with his mother, two older sisters, and his
younger brother, who was born two months after his father's death.
On September 2, 1862, he enlisted as a private in "I" Company,
28th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, two weeks after his fifteenth
birthday, by listing his age as eighteen. The regiment saw combat at
Fredricksburg and Chancellorville. After the war, he lived in Brooklyn, N.Y. until about 1889. At that time he moved to Scranton, Pa., where he lived until his death at the age of 63, on December 23, 1910. He was a member of the Lieut. Ezra A. Griffin Post
No. 139, G. A. R., in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Background is a photograph of the memorial
to the men of the 2nd Regiment, Kansas State Militia, who died in the Battle of the Blue on 22 October 1864. The monument is located in Topeka Cemetery, Topeka, Kansas, and was dedicated on 30 May 1895. It was privately funded by G. G. Gage, who was a
private in the Topeka Battery of the 2nd Regiment, K.S.M. Gage was among
