U.S.C.T. Soldiers Buried in Topeka Cemetery

The following is a listing of members of the U.S. Colored Troops who are buried in the Topeka Cemetery.  Topeka Cemetery was established in 1859 on a hill East of the city.  As such, many of the people who were the history of Topeka and Kansas in the “Bleeding Kansas” days prior to the Civil War, during the war, and after the war are buried there.  The Topeka Cemetery was never a segregated cemetery, although various groups, lodges, and organizations might tend to prefer certain sections.  The Lincoln Post No. 1, Department of Kansas, Grand Army of the Republic, (an organization comprised entirely of Union Civil War veterans) owned a G.A.R. section in Topeka Cemetery.  In keeping with the motto of the Grand Army of the Republic, “Fraternity, Charity, Loyalty,” the post provided a no-cost cemetery plot to any indigenous Civil War veteran.  This G.A.R. section is section 21 in the cemetery, and contains the graves of 268 Union soldiers.  As such, you will note that almost 75 percent of the U.S.C.T. burials are located in this section.
