The whispered secrets they do send, and you alone hear what they say of magic lost and ever missed ~Rabbit Among the Faeries

Pretty is as Pretty Does

The most common picture that comes to mind when one thinks of the fae folk is that of a young child or pretty woman with wings ~ everything is dainty and pretty and sweet. Mary Cicely Barker (to my mind) has captured this image perfectly.

But that, by no means, is the whole truth. For as varied as humans are, so are the fae. Both in image and in temperment, there are lovely visions to echo in your daydreams as well as haunting images to infect your nightmares. from Faeries
Brian Froud and Alan Lee have captured the other side of the coin superbly. They have written a book called Faeries and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a greater truth. These images are from that book.

There are also many creatures and beings that aren't strictly a faerie, but they are normally thought of when you consider ugly fae. Hedghogs aren't faeires, but I couldn't resist including him!
