The Angels Were Generous

The Mask

I spent my whole life hiding
behind that old mask I’d built.
Easy to do the safe thing,
Keeping my guts unspilt.

Time to break out and attempt
to let someone see behind.
He saw the real me with a glimpse,
Too late I saw he was blind.

Not one to give up on a plan,
I thought I’d seek another.
Smarter than most was this man
As he ducked and ran for cover.

I was more than ready to quit
but I gave it another shot.
I lifted my mask just a bit:
He died there on the spot.

My feelings were rent and torn,
My life was in such turmoil.
I never should have been born!
At least not as a gargoyle.
