It is so important for everyone to have some kind of food storage for their
family. In 1993, the South had a blizzard. This was something that none of us expected - a couple of inches
perhaps - but we were literally snowed in. Our van was buried half way in snow and then of course it began to blow and
snow drifts piled up. We were without power and water for 7 days. Our home was all electric, so I cooked soup
on a charcoal grill. Our only source of heat was a Coleman Lantern. I covered the windows and doorways with quilts,
dragged mattresses into the living room at night and I lit that lantern every couple of hours to warm the room and then shut
it off to keep us from carbon monoxide poisoning. Thankfully, I had bought groceries the day before the blizzard and
had enough knowledge to use our Coleman camp stove for quick meals and the grill for longer cooking items. It was a
difficult time for us but we survived and learned many lessons. Since then there have been hurricanes, tornadoes, winter
ice storms, etc, but we now no longer fear them. The Lord has provided for us in every way.
I am not advocating the hoarding of food out of fear. To lay up storage of the summer harvest for use during the winter is not hoarding. To buy grain and nutritious food when it is affordable is a wise use of God’s provision. Allow me to add here to those who disagree that Christians should prepare storage for their family some of the evidences in Scripture that
this is a Godly plan. We see clearly in the heart of God there is a desire for His people to be prepared - He prepared
for our salvation through our Saviour before we were even born. He spoke to the heart of Noah to build
an ark in preparation to save mankind. In Genesis 41 we see the Lord leading His people to store food against a coming
famine. In Proverbs 6 we are reminding to see the wisdom of even the ant who
stores up for the winter. Proverbs 21:20 tells us “There is treasure to be
desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.” Again we see in 1 Timothy 5:8 shows
us “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse
than an infidel.” For those who might use the scripture of “we are not to worry about what we are to eat or drink”
please realize that indeed we are not worried. Worry is what this scripture is
about. No, we cannot possibly store enough food to prevent any difficulty that
may come in the future, the effort to do so would indeed be hoarding and it would require massive amounts of money, time and
space to try to do so, but we can be diligent to do what we can as the Lord leads.
