Practicing in southern California for almost 20 years, our work is heavily influenced by both the local climate and natural environment. Native plants and locally found materials are prominently featured in our work.Toyon Design is proud to have distinguished projects in a variety of different specialties, including:

  • Residential design: our projects have won numerous awards for excellence in both design and implementation over the years. Native plants and habitat gardens are often a focus of our residential work.
  • Arts & Crafts Period Gardens: we are strong believers in the Arts & Crafts design tradition. In addition to working on restoration and renovation of period Craftsman & Bungalow gardens, we have done many contemporary gardens inspired by the A&C tradition. All of our designs are rooted in the Arts & Crafts tradition of comfortable, livable, honest gardens with a strong sense of nature and connection to the regional environment. See some of our Arts & Crafts gardens in "Outside the Bungalow, America's Arts & Crafts Garden", by Paul Duchscherer & Douglas Keister, Penguin Studio, August 1999.
  • Interpretive & Educational Landscapes: we have been among the leaders in SoCal in this area for many years, with many local interpretive projects and nature center designs.
  • Commercial Landscapes: our commercial landscapes have won numerous awards for creating both visually interesting and low-maintenence/water conserving planted environments for our commercial landscape clients.
  • Biological Surveys & Restoration: in conjunction with our well-qualified consultants, we can provide watershed biota analysis, invasive plant mapping, and habitat analysis surveys for land acquisition purposes. We also have extensive experience in managenment and design of restoration and invasive plant removal projects.
