We work hard to feed our chickens quality layer crumbles, scratch, a calcium supplement for good egg-shell quality, and flax seed to boost Omega-3 in our eggs. All this helps to make healthy, happy chickens that are producing nutritious eggs for us!

Our chickens have a vegetarian layer crumble feed mixed with a small amount of 3-grain scratch available at all times in their coop. They also have a supplement of calcium available--oyster shell and any ground egg-shells we have saved up. They also get Tuff Shell, a feed grade calcium supplement/grit.

Three Grain Scratch

A blend of grains which provide supplemental energy to poultry diets...plus, it keeps them busy in the run!

Daily Treats

Our ladies are spoiled with goodies every day. They usually get a treat or combination of treats from the list below, but sometimes they are lucky enough to get "leftovers" from the previous nights dinner! They love leftover salad scraps after I rinse off the dressing, and they really love leftover Subway sandwiches! We stay away from giving them anything salty, sugary, or spicy...although taco salad is a favorite :-)

Here's a list of some of the regular treats:

oatmeal
rice
plain yogurt
hearts of romaine lettuce
various other lettuces
baby spinach
broccoli
tomatoes
apples
grapes
strawberries
breakfast cereal "crumbs"
plain tortilla chip "crumbs"
corn cobs

When seasonally available or on clearance in the produce dept.:

various squash
pumpkin
gourds
cucumber
plums
corn

In addition to any bugs they find in the run, I also periodically provide treats--especially in the winter--of crickets or meal worms from the pet-store or night-crawlers (earthworms) from the bait section at Walmart.

During the summer, we cut back the amount of 3-Grain Scratch because too much corn in the heat of the summer is not good for chickens. We are now adding in Crimped Oats and Black Oil Sunflower Seeds with a little bit of the 3-Grain Scratch.

My research indicates that Omega-3 is obtained through plenty of greens (grass & veggies). We regularly supplement hearts of romaine, baby spinach, broccoli, and other lettuces since the run is currently barren of greens. Just to make sure they consume enough Omega-3, we supplement their feed and treats with flax seed which is an excellent source of Omega-3.

Our chickens never receive synthetic medications or supplements (i.e., vaccinations, antibiotics, hormones/boosters). We keep our flock healthy by monitoring them, providing healthy food and clean water, and keeping the chicken coop and run clean.
